Australia could see its prison population rise to six figures if more is not done to stop the revolving door of re-offending, according to the convenor of a prisoner reintegration conference being held by Deakin University in Darwin this week.
Deakin School of Psychology Professor Joe Graffam said an urgent re-think was needed regarding Australia’s criminal justice system, with prisons increasingly used as places to warehouse people facing difficulties associated with poverty, homelessness, mental ill-health, cognitive impairment and substance abuse.
