Why we need Smarter Justice? Perspective 8 in a new CEDA report

Professor Joe Graffam and Jenny Crosbie have co-authored a chapter in CEDA’s latest publication: ‘Connecting people with progress: securing future economic development’.

They submit that smarter justice must be preventive, rehabilitative, and restorative and built on the following built three core principles:

• Understanding and addressing pre-conditions that lead to offending.

• Conceptualising prevention and reintegration in terms of the whole person.

• Respecting the basic human rights of people who have paid their ‘debt’ by serving a sentence or order, as well as the rights and needs for restoration on the part of victims and society.
